Why MFA is the first thing you should turn on

Security · Sep 2, 2026

If you could do just one thing this month to protect your company, it would be this: turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) on email and your important systems. No other measure removes so much risk for so little effort.

What MFA is

It's a second proof that it's really you, on top of the password: a code on your phone, a notification you approve, or a physical key. Even if someone steals your password, without that second factor they can't get in.

Why it matters so much

Passwords leak all the time — through reuse, phishing, stolen databases. MFA turns a stolen password into something almost useless to the attacker. It's the difference between "they got into your email" and "they tried and couldn't".

Where to turn it on first

  1. Corporate email (Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace).
  2. Access to banking and financial systems.
  3. Admin panels (hosting, domains, CRM).
  4. Backup and cloud storage accounts.

A tip

Prefer an authenticator app or a physical key over SMS codes, which are more vulnerable. In Microsoft 365 this can be made mandatory for the whole company with a conditional access policy.
